In many Vedic and Pauranic literature, Rukmini is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Laxmi who is the principal wife of lord Vishnu. As Krishna is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, he married Rukmini. According to Bhagwat Geeta, Krishna kidnapped Rukmini and married her as she was a devotee of Lord Krishna and her brother wanted her to get married to Sishupal.
