Adding Integers - Rules and Examples

Adding integers refers to the way of adding two or more integers. Depending on the integers used in addition ( either positive integers or negative integers or a mixture of both positive and negative integers or zero )

The rules for adding integers are as follows:

If the integers have the same sign, add their absolute values and give the result the same sign as the integers.

If the integers have different signs, subtract the absolute value of the integer with the smaller absolute value from the absolute value of the integer with the larger absolute value and give the result the same sign as the integer with the larger absolute value.

Here are some examples to illustrate these rules:

To add 2 + 3, we get 5, because 2 and 3 have the same sign (both positive) and their sum is positive.

To add (-2) + (-3), we get -5, because -2 and -3 have the same sign (both negative) and their sum is negative.

To add 2 + (-3), we get -1, because 2 and -3 have different signs. We subtract the absolute value of -3 from the absolute value of 2, which gives us 5 - 3 = 2. We give the result the same sign as 2, which is positive, so the final answer is 2.

To add (-2) + 3, we get 1, because -2 and 3 have different signs. We subtract the absolute value of -2 from the absolute value of 3, which gives us 3 - 2 = 1. We give the result the same sign as 3, which is positive, so the final answer is 1.
