Why mitochondria is called powerhouse of cell?

Mitochondria are often called the powerhouse of cell or energy factories of the cell because it contains oxidative enzymes which oxidize the food and convert them into energy currency of the cell in the form of ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate). This energy is used for making new compounds and for carrying out other processes. Thus, mitochondria are called the powerhouse of cell.
