What is place value in maths with examples?

The place value of a digit in a number is the value of the digit with reference to its position in that number. For example, the Place value of 5 in 3577 is 500.

For better understanding, let's look at some more examples:

The place value of 3 in 3577 is 3000 as 3 is the required digit which is located at the thousandth place in the required number, so place value = 3 x 1000 = 3000.

The place value of 2 in 27 is 20 as 2 is the required digit which is located at the tens place in the required number, so place value = 2 x 10 = 20.

Note:

2. Place Value of a digit is also known as the Local Value of a digit.
