The word OK was used as a political slogan during the presidential re-election campaign of Martin Van Buren (  8th US President 1782 - 1860 ) in 1840. As Martin Van Buren's nickname was Old Kinderhook derived from his birthplace provided these initials and thus the word formed was OK.

One more theory suggests that OK is derived from the word, Okay but one couldn't write that in full in telegraph or pager during olden days, and thus OK was used as a shorthand.
