What is NRC? The National Register of Citizens ( NRC ) is a national register for all Indian citizens whose existence and creation is mandated by the 2003 Amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1955. It has been firstly implemented for the state Assam starting in 2013. Recently, the Government of India has planned to implement National Register of Citizens all over the country till 2021.

According to the Citizenship Rules, 2003, the central government can issue an order to prepare the National Population Register (NPR) and create the NRC based on the data gathered in it. The 2003 amendment further states that the local officials would then decide if the person's name will be added to the NRC or not, thereby deciding his citizenship status. No new rules or laws are needed to conduct this exercise in the whole of India.

NRC क्या है? राष्ट्रीय नागरिक रजिस्टर (NRC) उन सभी भारतीय नागरिकों के लिए एक राष्ट्रीय रजिस्टर है, जिनके अस्तित्व और निर्माण को नागरिकता अधिनियम, 1955 के 2003 संशोधन द्वारा अनिवार्य किया गया है। यह पहली बार 2013 में राज्य असम के लिए लागू किया गया था। हाल ही में, भारत सरकार ने 2021 तक पूरे देश में राष्ट्रीय नागरिक रजिस्टर को लागू करने की योजना बनाई है।

The government will still have to travel long distances to bring this NRC. It will have to draft the NRC and get it passed by both houses of parliament. Then the NRC Act will come into existence after the President's signature. However, he was given a place in the NRC list of Assam who proved that he or his ancestors had settled in India before 24 March 1971.
