Yerba Mate Weight Loss

Yerba mate is a tree found exclusively in the Brazilian rainforests. It is generally recognized as a member of the holly family, and it can be found in many natural energy drinks, sometimes in combination with guarana and/or damiana.

It has been traditionally used to promote weight loss, relieve pain, fight headaches and fatigue, and alleviate bad breath. To date, the research is limited at best. But let’s take a look at how it works and more importantly if it works.

Weight Loss

Scientists have conducted multiple studies to study the weight loss benefits of yerba mate. All studies on yerba mate alone have shown that yerba mate does not actually promote weight loss results. On the other hand, one 2001 study showed slightly different results. This particular study showed that when taken together, guarana, yerba mate, and damiana slow the gastric emptying process, helping you to stay full for longer, eating less, and losing weight.

But there is only one study that shows these results, making results questionable.

Heart Problems

Yerba mate on its own might help you to strengthen heart muscles and prevent problems with ischemia, according to a 2005 study on rats. But there are no human studies to confirm this, and It is still highly suspect.

DNA Repair

Again, a rat study published in 2008 showed that it can neutralize harmful free radicals as a natural antioxidant. It, therefore, protects DNA cells from unnecessary damage.

Cancer

It seems like just about everything causes or prevents cancer these days. So far, there is no natural substance that has been clinically proven to fight cancer. But a number of studies have linked regular yerba mate intake with an increased risk of bladder, esophageal, lung, head, and neck cancers.

Other Safety Concerns

Yerba mate has been connected to anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and headaches. And due to its caffeine content, it can also be connected to high blood pressure, heart disease, and anxiety. But ironically, it’s one of the few forms of caffeine that does not promote any fat burning results.
